Among the most smoke CADR per dollar of the mainstream units sold in Canada. Blueair's Canadian page lists a smoke CADR of 435 cfm and a recommended room size of 674 sq ft, with a SmokeBlock carbon stage. The fabric pre-filter sleeve is washable and comes in colours. It is big and the filter is a proprietary cylinder, so price the replacements before you buy.

DIY box-fan filter (Corsi-Rosenthal box)

Four or five MERV 13 furnace filters taped to a box fan into a cube. It looks ridiculous and it works: independent testing during the pandemic and wildfire seasons showed these boxes moving large volumes of filtered air for a fraction of a purifier's cost. The parts are at Canadian Tire and Home Depot. It is loud on high, it needs a fan with a safe motor, and you replace the filters every few months.

Upgrading your furnace filter to MERV 13

If you have forced-air heat, the cheapest whole-house step during smoke season is a MERV 13 furnace filter and running the furnace fan on continuous. It does not match a room purifier in the room you sleep in, and a thick, restrictive filter can strain some older systems, so check with your HVAC installer. Combined with one good bedroom unit, it covers most homes.
