Baratza Encore ESP

The one most people should buy. The Encore ESP keeps the classic Encore's 40 mm conical burrs and simple body but splits its 40 settings so the first 20 are fine micro-steps for espresso and the rest are wide steps for filter. It is serviceable with cheap parts that Baratza sells, and it lists at $279.99 CAD at Canadian specialty retailers. Not an endgame espresso grinder, but a very good everything grinder.

Fellow Opus 2

The second generation of Fellow's all-purpose conical grinder, aimed squarely at the Encore ESP with a more modern design and a wide grind range from espresso to cold brew. Canadian retailers list it from $299 CAD depending on colour. Many buyers prefer how it looks on a counter next to the Baratza. Baratza still wins on parts support and long-term repair history.

Timemore Chestnut C5 PRO

The best value in hand grinders. Timemore's Chestnut line has a reputation for consistent steel burrs, a solid aluminium body and smooth bearings at a price that undercuts the European hand grinders by hundreds. The C5 PRO lists at $149 CAD. It is a filter-first grinder; for espresso you want the ESP version or an electric. Hand grinding a 20 g dose takes about a minute.

Fellow Ode Gen 2

A brew-only grinder with 64 mm flat burrs, single-dose loading and an auto-stop, built for people who make pour-over or batch brew and never espresso. The flat burrs give clean, clear filter cups, and retention is low. It lists at $499 CAD in Canada and sells out regularly. If you make espresso even occasionally, buy an all-purpose grinder instead.

The German hand grinder that coffee competitors carry. Its high-nitrogen steel conical burrs (Nitro Blade) give excellent consistency across filter and coarse espresso-adjacent settings, and the build will outlast you. Canadian retailers list it from $405 CAD, with the LAB Series burr options at $425. For a hand grinder that is serious money, which is the one argument against it.

The step up from the Encore for filter drinkers: a heavier metal base, a digital timer for repeatable doses, and a light on the grounds bin. It lists at $359.99 CAD. It is not as versatile at the espresso end as the Encore ESP, so pick this only if you mainly brew pour-over, drip or French press and want consistency at the push of a button.

Baratza Sette 270

A purpose-built espresso grinder at a reasonable price. Its unusual design spins the outer burr, giving fast grinding and very low retention, and it grinds straight into a portafilter. It has 30 macro and 9 micro steps for fine espresso adjustments. It is loud, and not well suited to filter. It lists at $579.99 CAD, with the 270Wi adding a built-in scale for $799.99.

Timemore Sculptor 064S

A single-dose flat-burr grinder with 64 mm burrs that covers both espresso and filter, at a price below the boutique single-dosers. It lists at $859 CAD at Canadian specialty retailers. Expect clean filter cups and capable espresso from the flat burrs once it is dialled in. It is a lot of money compared with the Encore ESP, so buy it when you know you want flat burrs.

Baratza Encore

The original Encore is still sold, at $199.99 CAD, and it is still the default entry burr grinder for drip, pour-over and French press. It is simple and fixable. Its espresso range is not usable for real espresso, which is why the ESP version is ranked higher. If you will never own an espresso machine, the classic Encore saves you about $80.

Porlex Mini II

The Japanese travel grinder that fits inside an AeroPress plunger. Ceramic conical burrs, a stainless steel body and a small capacity, about one or two cups at a time. It lists at about $105 CAD. Consistency is fine for AeroPress and pour-over, though behind the Timemore. Its value is that it goes everywhere: camping, cottages and hotel rooms.
