Figma

The industry standard for interface design, prototyping and design systems, and the place most product teams collaborate in real time. The Starter plan is free; Professional is US$16 a month for a Full seat, US$12 for a Dev seat and US$3 for a Collab seat, with Organization at US$55 per Full seat billed annually. It runs in the browser or desktop app. Seat-type pricing takes care to manage, and your files live in Figma's cloud.

4 pros · 3 cons

Affinity (by Canva)

The biggest shift in design software this decade: Affinity is now one app that combines vector design, pixel photo editing and page layout, and it is free for individuals. It runs natively on macOS (Apple silicon and Intel) and Windows, with an iPad version listed as coming soon. Optional AI tools unlock if you have a Canva premium plan. It is a credible replacement for much of Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign for solo designers.

4 pros · 3 cons

Adobe Photoshop

Still the reference photo editor and compositing tool, and the file format every print shop, agency and retoucher accepts. Generative fill, masking and selection tools are excellent, and the plugin ecosystem is enormous. Photoshop alone is US$22.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly; the Photography plan with Lightroom is US$19.99; Creative Cloud Pro is US$69.99 (US$34.99 for the first three months).

Adobe Illustrator

The vector tool print and branding work is still built around. Logos, packaging, type-heavy layouts and anything that has to survive a print shop's pre-flight usually lives in Illustrator. Its pen, shape builder and type tools are mature, and AI and EPS remain the interchange formats. US$22.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly, or inside Creative Cloud Standard (US$54.99) or Pro. Affinity now does much of this for free.

Canva

The design tool for everyone who is not a designer, and increasingly for designers who need speed. Templates for social posts, decks, documents and print, brand kits that keep a team on-palette, and a large stock and AI toolset. Canva now owns Affinity, and Affinity's AI tools unlock with a Canva premium plan. It is fast, collaborative and good enough for most marketing output, but precise layout and print control are limited.

4 pros · 3 cons

Penpot

The open-source answer to Figma, and the only serious UI design tool you can self-host. Penpot is built on open web standards (SVG, CSS and HTML), which developers appreciate at handoff. The Professional plan is free with no feature limits, Unlimited is US$7 per editor a month capped at US$175 a month regardless of team size, and Enterprise is US$25 per member. The plugin ecosystem and performance on huge files trail Figma.

4 pros · 3 cons

Sketch

The Mac-native UI design app that started the modern era of interface tools, and still a pleasure for designers who want a fast local app. The Standard subscription is US$12 per editor a month billed yearly with real-time collaboration and free viewers; a Mac-only licence is US$120 per seat with one year of updates, without collaboration or sharing. It is Mac only, and most teams now standardize on Figma, which limits file exchange.

4 pros · 4 cons

Procreate

The drawing app that made the iPad a real illustration tool. Its brush engine is superb, the interface disappears behind the canvas, and it is sold exclusively on the App Store as a one-time purchase with no subscription. Procreate has publicly rejected generative AI in its apps, which matters to many illustrators. It is iPad only (Procreate Pocket covers iPhone), and it is for painting and drawing, not layout or vector work.

4 pros · 3 cons

Krita

The best free painting program on the desktop, built by artists and licensed under the GNU GPL. Strong brush engines, animation tools and a sensible interface for digital painting and comics. The project released Krita 5.3.4 and 6.0.4 on September 15, 2026, and it also runs on Android tablets. It is a painting tool, not a photo editor or vector app, and colour-managed print workflows take some learning.

4 pros · 3 cons

GIMP

The long-running free photo editor, now on the modern 3.x line. GIMP 3.2.6 shipped on September 10, 2026. It has proper colour management for print and screen, and is scriptable in Python and Scheme with a large library of community plug-ins. It runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. The interface still feels unlike Photoshop, which slows switchers down, and it is weaker than Affinity for layout or vector work.
