A poker-themed roguelike deck-builder that eats evenings. You play poker hands to hit score targets and buy jokers that bend the rules, and the combinations are endless. It came to iOS and Android on September 26, 2024 (plus a Balatro+ version on Apple Arcade), won Best Mobile Game at The Game Awards 2024, and is a one-time purchase with no ads or in-app purchases. The only cost is your sleep.

Slay the Spire

The deck-building roguelike that started a genre, and still one of the best. Climb a spire choosing cards, relics and paths, with four characters that play completely differently. The mobile version is a faithful premium port of the PC game with touch controls that work well on a phone. Sessions pause and resume cleanly. It is turn-based, so there is no twitch pressure, but runs are long and the difficulty ascensions go deep.

Stardew Valley

The full farming-and-friendship game on your phone, including the updates the PC version received. Grow crops, fish, mine, decorate and get to know a town at your own pace. It is a one-time purchase with no ads or in-app purchases, and the touch controls are adapted well enough that it plays comfortably on a phone. Save files are separate from PC or console unless you move them manually, and some precise actions are fiddlier by touch.

Pokemon TCG Pocket

The Pokemon card game rebuilt for phones, and a phenomenon: over 100 million downloads by February 2025. You open a free five-card pack every 12 hours, collect beautifully animated cards and play quick battles won at three points, with ranked play added in March 2025 and expansions roughly monthly. It is free to play with gacha-style packs, a monthly Premium Pass and paid-only promos, and its trading system drew heavy criticism.

Marvel Snap

The fastest good card game on mobile. Matches last about three minutes: 12-card decks, three locations, six turns, and a snap mechanic that lets you bluff to raise the stakes. Reviewers including The Guardian found its microtransactions optional for enjoying it. It was briefly pulled from US stores in January 2025 because its publisher was owned by ByteDance, and has since moved to US-based Skystone Games as publisher.

Vampire Survivors

The game that turned auto-attacking horde survival into a genre. You only move; your weapons fire on their own, and over 30 minutes the screen fills with enemies and absurd evolved weapon combos. On phones it is free with optional ads for bonuses, and you can buy the DLC packs. It plays perfectly with one thumb in portrait or landscape. It is shallow by design, and late runs can make phones run hot.

Clash Royale

Supercell's real-time card battler has stayed near the top since 2016 for a reason: three-minute matches of pure decision-making about where and when to drop units. It is free-to-play with chests, card upgrades and a pass. Skill matters, but at higher trophy levels card levels from spending or years of play start to matter as much, and the progression systems are designed to keep you returning daily.

Honkai: Star Rail

A space-fantasy turn-based RPG from HoYoverse with big production values, voice acting and a long story that keeps getting new chapters. Turn-based combat suits phones better than action games, and auto-battle handles the grind. It is free with gacha character banners, and you can clear the story without paying. It is very demanding on older phones, takes a lot of storage, and the gacha pull is relentless.

Genshin Impact

A huge open-world action RPG that still looks remarkable on a phone. Explore regions, solve puzzles and fight with switchable characters whose elements combine. It is free, with years of story and regular region updates. The money is in gacha banners for characters and weapons, but the open world and story are fully enjoyable without paying. It needs a powerful phone, a lot of storage, and touch controls are workable rather than great.

Dead Cells

A fast, punishing action roguelite with excellent pixel art. You fight through a changing castle, unlocking new weapons and routes as you die and retry. The mobile version is a premium port with on-screen controls and support for Bluetooth controllers, which make it far better. It is a one-time purchase. Precise dodging on a touchscreen is hard, so treat a controller as nearly essential for the later bosses.
