The Best Smartphones to Buy (Fall 2026)

Ranked for someone buying a phone this fall: camera system, sustained performance, battery, software support and what you actually pay now that the memory-chip shortage has pushed prices up across the industry. Prices are US list or launch prices in USD and have moved several times in 2026, so check before you buy. Foldables are left out until Apple's iPhone Duo ships and gets real reviews.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro / 18 Pro Max

The A20 Pro is Apple's first 2 nm chip, and the main camera finally gets a variable aperture (f/1.48 to f/4.0) on a 48MP sensor, beside a 48MP ultra-wide and a 48MP 4x telephoto. Apple rates the 6.9-inch Pro Max at up to 45 hours of video playback and the 6.3-inch Pro at 36. Storage starts at 256GB. The catch: both went up US$100 over the 17 Pro, and the Pro Max weighs 249 g.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra

The best Android phone for most power users, though it is an incremental year. Every market gets the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, a tuned version of Qualcomm's chip. The new privacy display narrows viewing angles on demand, and wired charging jumps to 60W. Battery stays at 5,000mAh, the cameras barely changed, and there are still no built-in magnets. PhoneArena scored it 8.1/10. US$1,299 for 12GB/256GB.

Google Pixel 11 Pro / 11 Pro XL

Reviewers call the display the standout, one of the strongest panels measured on any phone, and the cameras are still class-leading for point-and-shoot photos. The weak point is again the chip. Tensor G6 brings big AI gains but trails similarly priced rivals in demanding tasks, and battery life draws criticism. Google raised prices, citing memory costs: US$1,099 for the Pro and US$1,299 for the Pro XL, 256GB minimum.

Apple iPhone 17

Now the value pick in Apple's lineup even after a price bump. The iPhone 17 has the A19, a 6.3-inch ProMotion display with always-on (the first base iPhone with 120Hz), a 48MP main and 48MP ultra-wide, and the 18MP Center Stage selfie camera. Apple raised it from US$799 to US$899 in September 2026, so the deal is worse than it was, but it still gives most people 90 percent of a Pro.

OnePlus 15

The battery king among phones sold in the US. A 7,300mAh silicon-carbon cell, 120W wired and 50W wireless charging, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 on a 6.78-inch display that hits 165Hz in games. It went on open sale in the US in December 2025 at US$899.99 for 12GB/256GB and US$999.99 for 16GB/512GB. Reviewers call the design boring, and the cameras trail the closely related Oppo Find X9 Pro.

4 pros · 3 cons

Google Pixel 10a

The fewest hardware changes in the a-series history, and still the value champion according to Tom's Guide. It reuses the Tensor G4 and the camera sensors from the 9a, keeps a 5,100mAh battery, and bumps wired charging to 30W. You get Google's software and its long update policy for US$499, though Google's devices VP warned that price may not last. No telephoto and no Pixelsnap magnets.

Samsung Galaxy S26

A compact flagship that changed little. The battery grows from 4,000 to 4,300mAh, but charging stays at 25W wired and 15W wireless (Qi2 Ready). US models run the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5; most other regions get Samsung's 2 nm Exynos 2600. GSMArena's review says Samsung put its effort into Galaxy AI and software rather than hardware. US$899.99 for 12GB/256GB at launch in March 2026.

4 pros · 3 cons

Google Pixel 11

The gap between standard and Pro Pixel is wider than ever this year, and the price went the wrong way: the Pixel 11 starts at US$899, US$100 more than the Pixel 10, though Google doubled base storage to 256GB. You still get Tensor G6 and Google's camera software. In CNN's testing the battery ran more than 21 hours of continuous 4K video playback, a strong result for its size.

4 pros · 3 cons

Apple iPhone 17e

What the 16e should have been. The 17e keeps the A19 from the iPhone 17 and adds MagSafe with 15W Qi2 wireless charging, which the 16e lacked. It has a single 48MP f/1.6 camera, a 6.1-inch 60Hz OLED, IP68 and 256GB to start. The 60Hz screen is the compromise reviewers flag most. It launched at US$599, and Apple raised it to US$699 in September 2026.

4 pros · 3 cons

Apple iPhone Air

The thin one: 5.6 mm, a 6.5-inch ProMotion display, the A19 Pro chip and a single 48MP rear camera, eSIM only. It is a beautiful object and a compromised phone. Battery life trails the iPhone 17, there is no ultra-wide or telephoto, and Apple raised it from US$999 to US$1,099 in September 2026, which puts it within US$100 of the 18 Pro. Buy it only if thinness is the point.
