Best Things to Do in New York City in December 2026

December 2026 in NYC, ranked on how much of the season each one captures, how easy it is to actually get in, and value for a visitor with a few days. Dates are the 2026 dates checked Oct 21, 2026, from the organiser where its site loaded, otherwise from a named outlet; nothing is carried over from 2025. Where 2026 details are not posted yet, we say so. Book timed tickets early, because the December weekends sell out.

The 2026 tree arrives Saturday, November 7 and is lit at the annual ceremony on Wednesday, December 2, both dates announced by Rockefeller Center. The start time, performers, hosts and the tree itself have not been announced yet. The ceremony is usually on NBC. The plaza is packed on lighting night; for a calmer look, go early on a weekday morning later in December.

Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes

The Rockettes' show returns to Radio City Music Hall on November 4, 2026, with 230 performances listed for the run. The official site did not show the closing date or prices when we checked, so look at the Times & Prices calendar. December evening and weekend shows fill first; weekday matinees are the easier get. It is the one ticketed show most visiting families plan a trip around.

The Rink at Rockefeller Center

The rink under the tree opened its season on October 10, according to Time Out New York. Skating here in December, with the lit tree above you, is the most photographed version of a New York winter. It has historically cost far more than skating free at Bryant Park. We could not load Rockefeller Center's own rink page to confirm pricing, so check before you book.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in Concert (New York Philharmonic)

The New York Philharmonic plays John Williams's score live while the film runs on screen, December 17-20 at the Wu Tsai Theater in David Geffen Hall, Lincoln Center, as part of its 2026-27 season. It is a good bridge for families between a kids' film night and a real orchestra concert. The page we checked did not list showtimes or prices.

New Year's Eve in Times Square

The ball drops from One Times Square at midnight on December 31, and the Times Square Alliance describes its seasonal events as free and open to the public. Its 2026-27 details (entry rules, timings, performers) were not posted when we checked on Oct 21, so do not plan around last year's. Expect to arrive many hours early with no easy bathroom access, or watch the free webcast instead.
