Sockeye at the Weaver Creek Spawning Channel, Harrison Mills

A three-kilometre artificial channel built in 1965 where chum, sockeye and pink salmon spawn within arm's reach of a gravel path. Sockeye run early to late October with peak activity roughly October 15 to 20, and the channel is open 8 am to 4 pm daily from October 1. The reason to prioritise 2026: it is the next dominant year in the four-year sockeye cycle, so the run should be substantially bigger than the intervening years.

Coho at the Capilano River Hatchery, North Vancouver

The in-city version of the salmon run and the best free thing on this list. Coho are visible June through November with peak migration in October, and you can watch fish climb the fish ladders from the observation gallery, then walk the river trails to see them in the wild. October hours are 8 am to 6 pm. Admission is free, which matters when the paid attraction next door charges a lot more for a bridge.

Eleven days of international cinema, talks and live events across downtown venues, opening October 1. This is the correct answer to the first fortnight of October rain: you are indoors, in a dark room, for exactly the stretch when the city turns grey and there is nothing outdoors worth doing. The full 2026 programme was announced August 26 with general ticket sales the following day, so by October the good sessions are already moving.

Hike the Grouse Grind before it closes for annual maintenance

That makes the first twelve days of October your last window of the year. The VMS Fall Mushroom Show at VanDusen

The Vancouver Mycological Society has run its fall show for more than forty years, in the Floral Hall at VanDusen: hundreds of specimens laid out and labelled, an identification table staffed by people who actually know, plus talks and a costume contest. Admission has been about $5 with kids under twelve free. The date lands in late October and the 2026 edition had not been posted as of mid-August -- confirm on the society site before you go.

Storm watching on the west coast -- the honest verdict on October

Everyone recommends this and nobody says the quiet part: the Tofino and Ucluelet storm season effectively starts in November, with November to January the peak for intensity. October is shoulder season -- you might get one, you will probably get rain without the drama. It is also not a day trip from Vancouver: ferry plus four-plus hours of driving each way means an overnight minimum. Go in November, or book October and treat storms as a bonus.
