Current winter tires sold in Canada, ranked on ice and snow grip first, then wet and dry manners and value. We cite only independent results we read: the Auto123 2025-26 guide and Tyre Reviews' write-ups of 2025 Nordic tests. Quebec requires winter tires Dec 1 to Mar 15 (SAAQ). BC requires M+S or 3PMSF tires on designated highways Oct 1 to Apr 30, and some routes end Mar 31 (gov.bc.ca).

The studless pick for real ice. Nokian calls it a non-studded winter tire whose Arctic Grip Crystals work like built-in studs, and its sidewall carries the ice-grip symbol for certified braking on ice. Auto123's tester ran it on a Porsche Cayenne with great satisfaction. In Tyre Reviews' 2025/26 Nordic studless test it finished close behind the snow leaders. A snowflake wear indicator disappears at 4 mm, which is the honest time to replace.

Continental VikingContact 8

The newest of the Nordic-style studless tires here. Continental Canada's brochure lists it for 15- to 22-inch rims in T and H speed ratings, with 3PMSF certification. Auto123 drove it on the ice and snow circuit at ICAR in Mirabel, Quebec. Tyre Reviews' write-up of the 2025 Tekniikan Maailma test names it best in snow. It is a soft, Nordic-type compound, so expect some squirm on warm, dry days.

Michelin X-Ice Snow

The sensible all-rounder. Auto123's tester has run the latest version on several vehicles and calls it "definitely recommended, especially for larger cars." It is the studless base model, and a studded X-Ice Snow North exists if you want pins. The independent data has one weak spot: in the 2025 Tekniikan Maailma test, as reported by Tyre Reviews, it had the longest braking distances on asphalt. That matters on bare urban pavement.

Bridgestone Blizzak WS90

The Blizzak name has been the North American studless benchmark for years, and the WS90 is the current version for regular cars. Auto123 calls it impressive on both snow and ice. It replaces the WS80, and Auto123 recommends it over the new performance-oriented Blizzak 6 for everyday vehicles. Bridgestone's site blocked our check, so no maker specs are quoted. Compare it with the Hakkapeliitta R5 on price for your size.

Goodyear WinterCommand Ultra

Goodyear's current studless line for North America. Auto123 notes that WinterCommand replaces the Ultra Grip line, which had "a superb reputation." Tire Rack lists it as a studless ice and snow tire for sedans, minivans, crossovers and SUVs, with the 3PMSF symbol, and Canadian retailers stock it in many sizes. We did not find independent scores for this exact model, so it ranks on reputation and spec rather than a test win.

Pirelli Ice Friction

Pirelli's new studless tire, launched in 2025, and the one that surprised Auto123. Its tester drove it on the ICAR Mirabel snow and ice track and found it the most impressive Pirelli he tried, then drove it again on a Nissan Rogue. Pirelli says the directional tread keeps most of its performance as it wears. That claim is the maker's, not a test result. It has less Canadian owner history than the Blizzak or Hakkapeliitta.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 (studded)

If your roads are glare ice for weeks, studs still win, and Tyre Reviews' account of the 2025 Tekniikan Maailma test says studs stay superior on ice near 0 C. The Hakka 10 is Nokian's studded flagship, with Double Stud Technology and Eco Stud 10 cushioning to keep studs seated. Auto123 recommends it "for both ice and snow." Studs are banned or seasonally limited in several provinces, so check your province first.

General Altimax Arctic 12

The best-value way into studs. Canadian Tire lists the Arctic 12 as a studdable passenger and CUV tire with stud holes and the three-peak snowflake rating for severe snow. You can run it unstudded in town or have it pinned for a rural commute, where provincial rules allow. It is not as refined as the premium studless tires above on wet roads, but it costs noticeably less and is easy to find at Canadian Tire.

Hankook Winter i*Pike RS2

Hankook's studdable winter tire. Retailers list it with the 3PMSF rating and studdable construction, and Canadian Tire lists it in common passenger sizes. It sits a step below the premium Nordic tires on refinement but well below them on price. A third-party overview says newer W429A variants have followed, so make sure you are buying current stock rather than an old date code.

Toyo Observe G3-Ice

Toyo's studdable winter tire, described by Canadian retailers as able to take studs for extra traction on ice and packed snow in severe-winter areas. It is a solid mid-priced choice for drivers who want the option of studs on a reputable brand. We found no current independent test data for it, which is why it ranks last. Choose it on price and availability in your size rather than on proven test results.
