Ranked by people who practise on them several times a week, on three things in this order: grip when your hands are sweaty, how long the surface lasts before it peels or goes shiny, and cushion versus stability (thicker is not better for standing balances). Material, weight and a realistic price tier are listed for each. Two of the brands here started in Canada, which is mentioned where it matters for buying locally.

Manduka PRO 6mm

The mat studios buy because it will outlast the studio lease. It is dense PVC, 6 mm thick, closed-cell so sweat does not soak in, and Manduka backs it with a lifetime guarantee. It is slippery for the first few weeks until you break it in with a salt scrub and use. It is also heavy, about 3.4 kg (7.5 lb), so it is a home or locker mat, not one you carry on a bike.

lululemon The Mat 5mm

The Vancouver brand's mat is popular for a reason: a polyurethane top layer that grips wet hands, over a natural rubber base for cushion. Retailers list it at 66 x 180 cm and 5 mm, made with FSC-certified rubber. It is easy to find in Canada and comes in a reversible version. The polyurethane top shows wear and marks faster than PVC, so expect to replace it sooner than a Manduka PRO.

Liforme Yoga Mat

The mat people buy for alignment. Its AlignForMe markings, printed into the surface, help you place hands and feet symmetrically, and the GripForMe surface is designed to hold when damp. At about 4.2 mm it is stable rather than plush. It is also among the most expensive mats on the market, so buy it for the alignment system and grip, not as a status object.

b, halfmoon B Mat Everyday 4mm

A Canadian story: B Yoga (Toronto) and Halfmoon (founded in BC in 1989) merged into b, halfmoon, and the B Mat Everyday carried over unchanged. It is 100 percent rubber, 71 x 26 in, 4 mm, about 1.9 kg, and retailers say it is made in Europe. Grip is excellent from day one, with no break-in. Canadian retailers including Northern Fitness list it around $124 CAD regular.

JadeYoga Harmony

The natural rubber mat that has been a studio staple for decades. It is open-cell natural rubber, so it grips by friction rather than tack, about 3/16 in (around 5 mm) thick, and Jade says it plants a tree for every mat sold. Open-cell rubber absorbs sweat, so it needs regular wiping and is not ideal for very hot classes. It is the classic recommendation for people who want rubber without polyurethane.

Manduka GRP Adapt

Manduka's answer to the sweat problem of the PRO. The GRP Adapt uses an open-cell surface designed to wick moisture so hands do not slide in a heated room, at 5 mm. It grips far better than an unbroken-in PRO in hot classes, but it is less durable and you have to clean it more often. If you only take one hot class a week, the PRO or a rubber mat is the better all-rounder.

Alo Yoga Warrior Mat

A polyurethane-over-rubber mat in the same family as the lululemon and Liforme mats, with a smooth, dense surface and strong wet grip. People like how it wipes clean and how it looks. It is heavier than most, and at its price you are paying partly for the logo. If you already like the brand and practise in heated rooms, it performs; otherwise the lululemon mat is similar for less.

Hugger Mugger Para Rubber XL

The thick one for knees and wrists. At about 1/4 in (around 6 mm) of natural rubber, and extra-long and wide in the XL, it gives real cushion for floor-heavy styles and bigger bodies without feeling like a foam pad. It is very heavy, so it should live at home. Open-cell rubber means it absorbs sweat, which limits it in hot rooms.

Manduka eKO SuperLite Travel Mat

A 1.5 mm natural rubber mat that folds into a suitcase and weighs about a kilogram. It is not meant to be used on its own on a hardwood floor; it goes on top of a hotel carpet or over a studio's rental mat that you do not want to touch. For travellers it is the most practical mat on this list, and the rubber grip is good.

Gaiam Premium Print Mat

The starter mat sold in every big-box store in Canada. It is PVC-based foam, around 6 mm, cheap, light and printed in endless patterns. It is fine for learning poses at home or in a beginner class. Grip falls off quickly when you sweat and the surface wears through in a year of regular use, at which point upgrading to anything above on this list feels transformative.
