Queen — Live Aid (1985)

Twenty minutes that a poll of 60+ industry insiders crowned the single greatest rock performance ever. Freddie Mercury commanding all 72,000 of Wembley through 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to 'We Are the Champions' is the gold standard of stage presence.

Jimi Hendrix — Woodstock (1969)

His distorted, feedback-soaked 'Star-Spangled Banner' wasn't just guitar virtuosity — it became a counter-culture statement and one of the defining sounds of the 1960s.

Prince — Super Bowl XLI Halftime (2007)

Prince played 'Purple Rain' in an actual downpour — when asked beforehand if the rain was a problem, he reportedly asked them to make it rain harder. Widely ranked the greatest Super Bowl halftime show ever.

Beyoncé — Coachella 2018 ('Beychella')

The first Black woman to headline Coachella delivered a two-hour HBCU-inspired spectacle complete with a surprise Destiny's Child reunion. Instantly canonized as one of the greatest festival headline sets of the modern era.

Pink Floyd — Live at Pompeii (1972)

Filmed in an empty ancient Roman amphitheatre with no audience, it turned a live performance into a surreal cinematic experience and remains one of the most distinctive 'live' documents in rock.

The Band — The Last Waltz (1976)

The Band's farewell concert, filmed by Martin Scorsese with Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and more guesting — a star-studded send-off long held up as one of the great live events ever captured.

3 pros · 1 cons

Talking Heads — Stop Making Sense (1983–84)

Jonathan Demme's concert film built around David Byrne's big-suit performance is routinely called the greatest concert film ever made — a piece of staged live art as much as a gig.
