The Safest Places to Legally Sleep in Your Car in Calgary

Calgary has no bylaw that bans sleeping in a legally parked car - but it caps street parking at 72 hours, closes every city park from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., prohibits camping in them outright, and treats every private lot as the owner's call. Ranked on whether the overnight stay is actually permitted, then lighting, washroom access, and how likely you are to be moved along.

Flying J Travel Center #785 (11511 40 Street SE)

The only operator in this entire set that documents overnight parking in its own words - Pilot's RV page says to park in their overnight spaces for a safe travel break. This site runs 24 hours with 128 public parking spaces plus 13 reservable Prime spaces, a Denny's, laundry, an ATM and a drivers lounge. Showers are paid: reserved through the app, or earned at one credit per 50 gallons of diesel.

Bow RiversEdge Campground (Cochrane)

The cleanest legal answer within striking distance of the city: a commercial campground at 100 Campground Road in Cochrane, roughly 40 minutes west of downtown, open April 1 to October 31 with 144 full-service sites and online booking. You are a paying guest on a managed property, which removes every ambiguity the rest of this list carries. It is RV-oriented, so phone ahead if you are simply sleeping in a car.

Wyndham-Carseland Provincial Park

About 50 minutes east of Calgary and 25 km south of Strathmore, with close to 200 unserviced sites strung along the Bow. An Alberta Parks unserviced site is the cheapest genuinely legal night anywhere near the city, and nobody is going to be knocking on your window at 3 a.m. The trade is the distance, basic facilities and a camping season - check dates and availability before you drive out on spec.

4 pros · 4 cons

Bow Valley Provincial Park

Forty-five minutes west on the Trans-Canada near Seebe, with a proper Alberta Parks campground, washrooms in season, and the Bow running past the sites. It is the best-looking legal night on this list by a wide margin and the one most likely to be full on a summer weekend, so reserve if you can. Outside the camping season the day-use areas are gated, so do not plan a November arrival around it.

Ghost Reservoir Provincial Recreation Area

Eighteen kilometres west of Cochrane on Highway 1A, roughly 50 minutes from downtown, with camping, a boat launch and vault toilets on a big open reservoir. Alberta Parks runs the site and the operator is Ghost Lake Recreations on 403-851-0766. Bring your own water - the hand pump there is explicitly not safe to drink from and exists for putting out fires, which is the kind of detail worth knowing at midnight.

Walmart supercentre lots

Walmart does publish a policy, and it is both more permissive and more conditional than the internet suggests. Corporate states it permits RV parking on store lots as it is able, that permission is extended by individual store managers based on parking availability and local laws, and that you should contact management at each store before parking. A yes in principle; a per-store question every single time.

4 pros · 4 cons

Roadking Travel Centre (4949 Barlow Trail SE)

A 24-hour travel plaza on Barlow Trail with a convenience store, a restaurant, a lounge and a Tim Hortons listed on their own amenities page. Three cautions, all real. Their website runs on HTTP with an expired certificate and carries copyright footers from 2009 and 2020, so nothing on it is confirmed current; a dated truck-stop directory note records no overnight parking; and no count of spaces or showers is published anywhere.

4 pros · 4 cons

Shell Cardlock #814 (2525 23 Street NE)

Listed by Pilot as open 24 hours with showers, and the only northeast option here - useful coming in on the Trans-Canada from the east or heading for an early flight. Set expectations low: cardlocks are built around fuel-card customers, and the comparable Airdrie cardlock in the same network has just 10 public spaces and no showers at all. Ask on site before you commit to the whole night.

A legal on-street space outside a Residential Parking Zone

The option most people actually use, and the one the bylaw governs most clearly. Calgary requires a vehicle on a public street or alley to move every 72 hours and to carry valid registration and insurance and be in working condition. Nothing in that says you cannot be asleep inside it. Residential Parking Zones are the trap - without a permit you are held to the posted limit. Pick a commercial street, never a residential one.

4 pros · 4 cons

Calgary casino lots (Deerfoot Inn, Grey Eagle, Cowboys, Pure)

The classic suggestion, and not one of them supports it. Deerfoot Inn and Casino at 11500 35 Street SE publishes nothing about RV, overnight or oversized parking anywhere on its site, and the widely-repeated twenty-dollars-a-night figure has no source behind it. Grey Eagle mentions only free and secure parking. Cowboys publishes no parking information at all. Every one of them is an unknown, not a yes.

4 pros · 4 cons

Flying J #793 (4216 72 Avenue SE)

On every list of Calgary truck stops and wrong for this particular purpose, which is why it sits down here. Pilot's own listing gives its hours as 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends - it is not a 24-hour site - and it has only 15 public parking spaces and 2 showers. You can sit in the lot, but the building is locked overnight, so there are no washrooms and nobody to ask.

4 pros · 4 cons

Highway rest areas on Highway 1 and Highway 2

Last, because the rule is genuinely unclear and pretending otherwise would be the dangerous thing to do. No published Alberta government policy on overnight parking at highway rest areas could be found during this check. What the secondary sources consistently agree on is that camping - awning out, chairs, a tent - is not permitted, while a driver pulling over to sleep off fatigue is treated as a different thing.
