The Best Things to Do in Calgary in September 2026
Ranked by how much of each thing is genuinely September-only rather than a year-round attraction with a fall photo attached. Larch timing, the Highwood Pass window, the elk rut, harvest markets and the first week of the hockey and CFL calendar all outrank anything you could just as easily do in July. Subalpine larch needles go gold for roughly three weeks a year, and in Kananaskis that window runs from about the fourth week of September into the first week of October. Ptarmigan Cirque is a short loop starting at Highwood Pass, the highest paved trailhead in Canada, so you begin near treeline instead of grinding up to it. Arethusa Cirque across the highway is flatter, shorter and busier. Both are half-day walks, not summit days.
Larch Valley and Sentinel Pass from Moraine Lake
The famous version of larch season, and the one with logistics. Moraine Lake Road is closed to private vehicles, so you ride the Parks Canada shuttle; the 2026 road season runs June 1 to October 12, with shuttles roughly 6:30 am to 5 pm and a last return around 7:30 pm. The third week of September is peak gold. Forty percent of shuttle seats are released in April and the other sixty percent two days out, which is the realistic way in.
Drive Highway 40 over Highwood Pass before the December gate
Canada's highest paved road tops out at 2,206 m and closes to vehicles from December 1 to mid-June every year for wildlife. September is the sweet spot: the road is open, the larches around the pass are turning, the summer crowds have thinned and you can be at the top in about ninety minutes from the south end of Calgary. Treat it as a drive with three or four short stops rather than a single destination.
Spruce Meadows -- the Masters tournament, September 9 to 13
The biggest show jumping week in the country lands on Calgary's south edge every September, finishing on the Sunday with the CPKC International presented by Rolex. General admission gets you the grounds, the international food and craft market and most of the ring action; the Sunday feature is the one that fills the hill. If you have never been, go on the Thursday or Friday when you can actually walk up to the rings.
Labour Day Classic -- Stampeders vs Edmonton, September 7 at McMahon
The oldest grudge match in Alberta sport, played every Labour Day at McMahon Stadium. The 2026 edition kicks off at 4:00 pm MT on Monday September 7 against Edmonton. It is a different crowd from a regular Stampeders night -- louder, more visiting fans, more people who only come to one game a year. The Stampeders host Ottawa again on September 19 at 5:00 pm if the Classic sells out or you want the calmer version.
Calgary International Film Festival, September 24 to October 4
CIFF is the largest film festival in Alberta and an Academy Award qualifying festival, with more than 200 features and shorts across venues in the city plus an online component. The 2026 edition opens on September 24 and runs to October 4. It is the one time of year Calgary gets festival-circuit titles months before they turn up anywhere else, and single tickets are priced close to a normal cinema seat.
Flames preseason at the Saddledome -- September 20 and 22
Two home preseason games: Seattle on September 20 with a 6 pm puck drop, and Vancouver on September 22. Preseason tickets are the cheapest way into the building all year and the sightlines are identical to a regular-season night. The extra reason to go in 2026: the Flames have announced this as their final season at the Scotiabank Saddledome, with the regular-season home opener on October 1 against Seattle.
Elk rut in the Bow Valley -- Banff, Canmore and the Vermilion Lakes
From late August to mid-October the bulls bugle, gather harems and become genuinely dangerous. Parks Canada issues an advisory every year: stay back at least 30 metres, travel in groups, detour rather than push past, keep dogs leashed, and never turn your back or run. Vermilion Lakes and the Banff townsite edges are the reliable spots. This is the loudest, strangest wildlife event of the Rockies year and it costs nothing.
Railway Days at Heritage Park, September 19 and 20
Heritage Park runs its Historical Village on weekends only after Labour Day through to Thanksgiving Monday, and Railway Days on September 19 and 20 from 10 am to 5 pm is the best of those weekends. The draw is the 1907 turntable swinging the steam locomotive around, plus rolling stock and model layouts that are not out the rest of the year. Cooler weather also means the village is walkable without the July crowd.
Canmore Highland Games, September 4 to 6
Western Canada's biggest Highland games, an hour up the Trans-Canada, staged over the Labour Day long weekend -- September 4 to 6 in 2026. Heavy events, massed pipe bands and Highland dance with the Three Sisters as the backdrop. It works best as a half-day: get there mid-morning, watch the heavies and the massed bands, then walk into Canmore for lunch rather than eating on site.
Calgary Philharmonic opens its season at the Jack Singer
The orchestra comes back to the Jack Singer Concert Hall on September 11 with Threads: My Songs in Symphony, a Dolly Parton multimedia programme with Dolly narrating on screen -- a deliberately wide-appeal opener. The 2026/2027 Classics series proper starts a week later with Nordic Nights on September 18 and 19. If you have never been, the opener is the low-commitment way in; the Classics night is the real thing.
Alberta Culture Days across the greater downtown, all September
Alberta Culture Days runs September 1 to 30, aligned with the Month of the Artist, and the City of Calgary programme concentrates free or low-cost public events in the greater downtown across the month. Because sites are funded as feature, host or pop-up sites, the calendar is genuinely scattered -- the useful move is to check the City listing at the start of the month and pick two or three, rather than hunting for one flagship day.
Harvest season at the Calgary Farmers Market -- South and West
Both permanent halls run year-round, but September is when the Alberta produce actually shows up in volume: field tomatoes, corn, squash, the last of the stone fruit trucked in from the Okanagan. South (Blackfoot) is open Thursday to Sunday 9 am to 5 pm; West (Greenbriar) is open Wednesday to Saturday 9 am to 7 pm and Sunday 9 am to 5 pm. West is the newer, roomier building and has the later weeknight close.
The Saskatoon Farm, south of Calgary
A working farm and agritourism site in the Foothills south of the city -- restaurant, bakery, garden centre, gift shop and a seasonal market, with an annual Fall Fair featuring live music, an outdoor market and tractor rides. Be clear on timing: the u-pick saskatoons are a late-July thing and the cherries and currants are August, so a September visit is about the fall fair, the greenhouse and the pie, not the picking.
