The Biggest Sports Events of Fall 2026
A planning calendar for the late-August-to-December stretch, ranked by scale of audience and how much of the window each one occupies rather than by date. Every start date, venue and format note was confirmed against league and event sources on 2026-08-17. The 2026 World Cup finished on July 19, so the fall belongs to North American leagues again.

The regular season opens with Seattle hosting New England in a Super Bowl LX rematch at Lumen Field, 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC, on a Wednesday rather than the usual Thursday. Week 1 then runs Sunday, September 13 with thirteen games, and closes Monday, September 14 with Denver at Kansas City. From there the NFL occupies every Sunday until January.
MLB postseason and the World Series - September 29 to October 31
The regular season ends September 27 and the postseason begins September 29, with the World Series scheduled for October 23 to 31. Going into mid-August the divisions were led by Tampa Bay, Milwaukee, Atlanta and Los Angeles, with the wild card races unusually tight - by one count 24 teams sat in a playoff spot or within six games of one, the highest on record.
US Open tennis - August 30 to September 13
The last Grand Slam of the season runs at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, with a $90 million total purse. Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka arrive as defending singles champions. Main-draw singles begins August 30, the women's final is September 12 and the men's final September 13, with Fan Week and qualifying preceding it from August 23.
NHL opening night - Tuesday, September 29
The earliest opening night the league has scheduled, and the start of the first 84-game season since 1993-94. Carolina raises its Stanley Cup banner against Florida at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN, Toronto hosts Montreal at 7 p.m. on Sportsnet, Boston visits the Rangers at 8, Edmonton hosts Vancouver at 10 and Vegas hosts Chicago at 10:30.
NBA opening night and the NBA Cup - October 20 onward
Opening night is a Tuesday tripleheader on NBC: Boston at Detroit at 3 p.m. ET, Philadelphia at New York at 7, and Oklahoma City at San Antonio at 9:30. New York raises its first championship banner since 1973. The NBA Cup group stage then runs October 30 to December 11, so the first six weeks of the season carry an in-season tournament on top.
Formula 1 runs to Abu Dhabi - August 23 to December 6
The championship resumes at Zandvoort on August 23 with twelve rounds left and 316 points still available in the drivers' standings. This is year one of the new power-unit and aerodynamic rules: the MGU-H is gone, MGU-K output rises sharply, active aero replaces DRS, and downforce drops about 15 percent. Audi and Cadillac both entered the grid this season.
College football Week 0 and Week 1 - August 29 to September 6
The earliest football of the fall. Week 0 is Saturday, August 29 with eight games, including North Carolina against TCU in Dublin at noon ET and USC against San Jose State at 3 p.m. Week 1 opens Thursday, September 3, peaks Saturday, September 5 on Labor Day weekend, and closes Sunday, September 6 with Notre Dame against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field.
The Grey Cup returns to Calgary - November 15
The 113th Grey Cup is at McMahon Stadium on November 15. The CFL regular season runs to October 24 and 2026 brought the most substantial rule package in years: a 35-second play clock replacing the 20-second clock outside the final three minutes, benches moved to opposite sidelines, no more ties (alternating two-point convert attempts from the three-yard line), and a modified rouge.
Presidents Cup at Medinah - September 24 to 27
The 16th Presidents Cup is at Medinah Country Club in Illinois, Brandt Snedeker captaining the United States against Geoff Ogilvy's International team. Six US players qualify on FedEx Cup points earned from January 1, 2025 through August 23, 2026, and six International players on world ranking as of August 31, with six captain's picks each side.
NASCAR brings back the Chase - August 29 to November 8
The playoffs begin after the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona on August 29 and finish with the Straight Talk Wireless 400 at Homestead-Miami on November 8. NASCAR returned to the Chase format used from 2004 to 2013: sixteen drivers qualify on points with no win-and-you-are-in rule, starting positions are staggered by regular-season standings, playoff points are gone and a win is now worth 55 points instead of 40.
UEFA Champions League league phase - from September 8
Matchday 1 runs September 8 to 10 and the league phase continues through matchday 6 on December 8 and 9 before resuming in the new year, ending January 27. Paris Saint-Germain enter as two-time defending champions and qualify automatically. The final is June 5, 2027 at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, its second time hosting after 2019.
The NFL's nine international games - September 27 to November 22
Beyond the Melbourne opener, the league plays eight more games abroad: Baltimore at Dallas in Rio on September 27, three London dates in October (the 4th, 11th and 18th, two of them Jacksonville home games), Pittsburgh at New Orleans in Paris on October 25, Cincinnati at Atlanta in Madrid on November 8, New England at Detroit in Munich on November 15, and Minnesota at San Francisco in Mexico City on November 22.
MLS playoffs - November 18 to December 18
The regular season ends November 7 after a six-week break from May 25 to July 16 for the World Cup, and the playoffs run November 18 to the MLS Cup final on December 18. This is the last full season under the spring-to-autumn format: a shortened 14-match bridge season follows in early 2027 before MLS moves to a summer-to-spring calendar in 2027-28.
College basketball tips off - November 1
The Division I men's season begins November 1 and runs to March 14, 2027. Three changes matter this year: schools can now schedule up to 32 regular-season games instead of 28 or 29, the ten-second backcourt count is now judged at 19 on the shot clock rather than 20, and the NCAA tournament expands to 76 teams. The tournament itself is in March, but the field is being built from November.
