This started as a hunt for Vegas hotels that take a cash deposit. Almost none document one, and two of the best-known downtown properties refuse cash for it in writing. So this ranks what actually works instead: how far cash and a debit card get you at each property, what the incidental deposit costs, how long the refund takes, and which desks you simply have to phone. Plaza Hotel & Casino

The best documented outcome for a cash traveller anywhere on this list, and the distinction in the Plaza's own FAQ is exactly the one that matters: cash is accepted for every charge except the $100 refundable security deposit, which has to sit on a debit or credit card. That $100 is flat per reservation rather than per night, so five nights costs the same hold as one. Your ID has to match the name on the card.

The STRAT Hotel, Casino & SkyPod

Golden Entertainment publishes its check-in requirements plainly, which is more than most of the Strip manages: a physical, valid, government-issued ID and a physical card. A debit card counts. The incidental deposit is $75 a night capped at $300 for the whole stay, so your exposure is bounded and knowable before you arrive. The catch for debit users is the refund - estimated at 10 to 20 business days.

El Cortez Hotel & Casino

Worth reading before you book, because the policy page says the quiet part out loud: an incidental deposit is required for all stays, it must go on a credit or debit card, and cash is not accepted. Amounts are published by room type - $50 a night up to $150 for Pavilion and Cabana rooms, $150 per stay for Original 47 and Tower rooms, $250 for suites. Refunds take three to ten business days to show up.

Resorts World Las Vegas

The clearest age rule on the list and a straightforward card requirement: government-issued ID plus a credit or debit card at check-in, covering both room charges and a nightly incidental hold. Debit is explicitly acceptable, which is the part that matters when you have no credit card. What is not published anywhere is the size of that nightly hold, so budget generously and ask at the desk before you hand the card over.

Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino

A full hotel-policy page that repeatedly refers to the credit card and/or debit card presented at registration, and never once mentions cash. That is not a written refusal, but it is not an opening either, and no deposit amount is published. Treat this one as a phone call before you book rather than an assumption. It sits a couple of blocks off Fremont and is otherwise a solid downtown value.

MGM Grand (and MGM Resorts properties generally)

Reported, not confirmed, and this is the entry to handle most carefully. A widely-cited Vegas blog states MGM accepts credit card, debit card or cash for the security deposit, at a reported $100 a night capped at $400. MGM's own help centre could not be reached to verify that during this check, and the source does not document how or when a cash deposit comes back - which is precisely the detail you need.

The Orleans Hotel & Casino

Reported to allow a cash-forward arrangement - roughly a $100 security deposit with the stay payable in advance - but Boyd Gaming publishes no hotel policy or FAQ page for any of its Las Vegas properties, so there is nothing to check that against. The off-Strip location on Tropicana Avenue with a free Strip shuttle is a genuine draw for a budget trip. Phone the front desk and get the deposit terms before you commit.

Sam's Town Hotel & Gambling Hall

Same operator and exactly the same evidence problem as The Orleans: a secondhand report of a cash-and-prepay route, and no published policy to check it against. Sam's Town sits well out on Boulder Highway, which is what keeps the room rates low and makes it a reasonable base if you have a car. As with every Boyd property here, the deposit terms are a phone call rather than a lookup.

The Venetian and The Palazzo

There is a reported cash route here, but look at the shape of it before you get excited: it is a prepayment path, not a walk-up one. The report describes booking at least 21 days ahead with a 72-hour window in which to pay, using cash, a personal cheque or a cashier's cheque. If you are arriving today with cash in your pocket, this does not help you at all. If you are planning weeks out, it might.

Wynn Las Vegas and Encore

The most restrictive of the reported cash paths: book roughly two weeks ahead, in person at the front desk, with the room held for 24 hours. That is a plan rather than an option, and it comes from a secondary source rather than anything Wynn publishes. It earns a place because a traveller without a credit card deserves to know the top of the market has a path at all, however awkward that path turns out to be.

The D Las Vegas

Publishes a hotel FAQ, which puts it ahead of most of Fremont Street, and then uses it to tell you precisely two things: check-in starts at 3 p.m. and the minimum age is 21. Nothing about deposits, nothing about cards, nothing about cash. The absence is worth ranking, because it is the common case downtown - the policy exists, it is simply never written down. Call the property before you book.

Golden Gate Hotel & Casino

The oldest hotel in Las Vegas, and its FAQ carefully documents the casino cage - cheque cashing, travellers cheques, credit card advances, identification required for every transaction - while saying nothing whatsoever about the room deposit. Same ownership group as The D and Circa, and the same gap in published policy. A cage that handles cash well is not the same thing as a front desk that takes it.

SAHARA Las Vegas

The clearest no on this list, and the reason it is worth reading all the way down. SAHARA's own FAQ states you must be at least 21, with valid government ID and a major credit card, to both reserve a room and check in. Its rate terms repeat the same thing - a major credit card is required at check-in and will be authorised for an incidental deposit of up to $100 a day. Not a debit card. Not cash.
