Ranked on how well each handles a large, mixed-age group, how fast it is to teach after a big meal, and whether non-gamers enjoy it. The best first game for a table that says it does not play games. Everyone writes a one-word clue for the guesser, and identical clues cancel out, so you are cooperating while quietly trying to be original. It is for 3 to 7 players aged 8+, takes about 20 minutes, and won the 2019 Spiel des Jahres. A 2025 edition added 550 new words and new dry-erase markers.

Herd Mentality

Built for the biggest gatherings on this list: Big Potato rates it for 4 to 20 players aged 10+, in about 20 minutes. Everyone answers a question, and you score only if you match the majority. The pink cow goes to whoever is the odd one out, and you cannot win while holding it. It rewards knowing your family, not knowing facts, which levels the playing field.

Wavelength

The game that starts the best arguments. One player gives a clue that places a hidden target on a spectrum (cold to hot, overrated to underrated) and their team turns the dial. It supports 2 to 12 players, 30 to 45 minutes, and is listed 14+. It was published in 2019 after a Kickstarter by Palm Court, now renamed CMYK. Best when the group knows each other well.

Hues and Cues

The colour game that grandparents and 8-year-olds play equally well. A cue-giver picks one of 480 shades on the board and gives a one-word clue, then everyone places a token where they think it is. It runs 3 to 10 players, about 30 minutes, ages 8+, published by The Op Games in 2020 and designed by Scott Brady. No reading or trivia required.

Codenames

The modern classic of word-association team games, and still the default for a second table of teens and adults. Two spymasters give one-word clues to link several words on the grid. It plays 2 to 8 or more in teams, rounds take about 15 minutes, and it won the 2016 Spiel des Jahres for Czech Games Edition and designer Vlaada Chvatil. Age listings range from 10+ to 14+.

The quiet hit of family card games: a lowest-score-wins card game that the whole table picks up in one hand. Magilano rates it for 2 to 8 players aged 8+, about 30 minutes, with 150 cards in the box. You flip and swap cards in your grid, and the game ends once someone reaches 100 points. Listings disagree on its original release year, so we do not quote one.

The get-to-know-you game for families who think they already know each other. Everyone answers a numeric question secretly (how long is a perfect nap?), then the group lines up the answers in order and earns points for each one in the right place. Each player secretly writes clues linking pairs of words on their four-leaf board, then the table works together to rebuild everyone's clover. It is cooperative, 3 to 6 players aged 10+, about 30 minutes, designed by Francois Romain and released by Repos Production in 2021. Better for a smaller side table.

For the competitive older cousins. Two teams pass secret three-digit codes through clues about their hidden words, while the other team listens and tries to intercept. It plays 3 to 8 aged 12+, 15 to 45 minutes, from Le Scorpion Masque and designer Thomas Dagenais-Lesperance in 2018. A 5th Anniversary edition adds 440 new words. Brilliant for teens and adults, too brainy for little ones.

Monikers

The loudest game here, and for adults only. It adapts the parlour game Celebrity: teams guess names from cards across rounds where clue-giving gets more limited, from free talking to one word to charades. Palm Court published it in 2015, designed by Alex Hague and Justin Vickers, for 4 to 20 players and 30 to 60 minutes. One listing rates it 18+, so keep it for after the kids go to bed.
