Giannis Antetokounmpo is traded to the Miami Heat

On July 6 Milwaukee sent Giannis and Bobby Portis to Miami for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, the draft rights to Nate Ament, first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 swap and a 2033 second. It ends 13 seasons in Milwaukee that produced two MVPs, the 2020 Defensive Player of the Year award, and the 2021 title with Finals MVP.

Kawhi Leonard returns to the Toronto Raptors

Toronto reacquired Leonard from the Clippers on June 30, sending back Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, a 2027 first-round swap right, 2031 and 2033 first-round picks and 2030 and 2033 seconds. Leonard's single season in Toronto in 2018-19 produced the franchise's only championship and his second Finals MVP. His availability, not his level, has been the question for five years.

LeBron James signs with the Philadelphia 76ers

James signed a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option on July 26, leaving the Lakers as a free agent for a 24th season - a league record. He keeps No. 23 and plays for Nick Nurse, who coached against him for years in Toronto. The salary is the striking part: an $8 million total on a two-year deal is a fraction of what a player of his profile normally commands.

Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia, Paul George to Boston

On July 6 the 76ers acquired Jaylen Brown from Boston for Paul George, a 2028 Clippers first-round pick, a 2031 Philadelphia first and two seconds. Twenty days later Philadelphia added LeBron James in free agency. Boston converted a max wing into an older player plus two first-round picks, which reads as a reset rather than a lateral move.

LaMelo Ball goes to Minnesota

On June 25 the Timberwolves acquired Ball and Josh Green from Charlotte. The Hornets received Naz Reid, an unprotected 2033 first-round pick, first-round swaps in 2028, 2029 and 2030, and three second-round picks. It is the largest pick haul of the offseason in raw count, and it moves one of the league's most watchable guards to a team that has been to the conference finals.

The Lakers pay a fortune for Walker Kessler

On July 1 Los Angeles acquired the centre from Utah in a sign-and-trade. The Jazz received unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033 plus first-round swaps in 2028 and 2030. Two unprotected firsts and two swaps for a non-All-Star centre is an aggressive price, and it came the same summer the Lakers lost LeBron James in free agency and moved Deandre Ayton to Washington.

Milwaukee changes coach in April and trades Giannis in July

Doc Rivers resigned on April 13 and Taylor Jenkins was hired on April 30. Ten weeks later the Bucks moved Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miami. Jenkins therefore takes over a roster built around a player who is no longer on it, with Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis arriving instead, plus Brayden Burries at pick 10.

The Clippers spend the summer retooling around the Kawhi trade

After moving Leonard on June 30, Los Angeles signed Rui Hachimura from the Lakers on July 6, took part in a six-team trade and re-signed Jordan Miller on July 9, added Johni Broome from Philadelphia on July 28, and in mid-August added Yuki Kawamura and re-signed Bradley Beal. Eight separate transactions between late June and mid-August.

Lu Dort lands in Atlanta in a three-team deal

On July 19 the Hawks acquired Dort and Ryan Nembhard, Dallas received Zaccharie Risacher and Oklahoma City took three future second-round picks. Atlanta had already added Aaron Wiggins from the Thunder on June 21 and Devin Carter from Sacramento on July 1, so the through-line is a deliberate stockpiling of defensive guards and wings.

AJ Dybantsa goes first overall to Washington

The Wizards took Dybantsa with the first pick of the 2026 draft, held June 23-24 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Washington then added Deandre Ayton from the Lakers on July 3, so the rookie arrives with an established centre rather than into an empty frontcourt. It is the least glamorous entry on this list and quite possibly the most consequential in five years.

Kyle Lowry retires after 20 seasons

Lowry announced his retirement on July 7 after 20 NBA seasons. He won the 2019 championship with Toronto, the only title in Raptors history, and remains the reference point for what that franchise looks like when it works. Twenty seasons puts him among a very small group of players in league history to last that long.

Russell Westbrook retires after 18 seasons

Westbrook announced his retirement on August 12, five days before this list was compiled, ending an 18-season career that included the 2017 MVP award. He is the second former MVP-calibre guard to retire this summer, alongside Kyle Lowry, and both announcements landed inside a five-week window in the middle of the offseason.

Six coaching changes beyond Milwaukee

Chicago replaced Billy Donovan with Tiago Splitter, Dallas replaced Jason Kidd with Dusty May, Orlando hired Sean Sweeney after Jamahl Mosley left for New Orleans, and Portland brought in Micah Nori. Dusty May arriving in Dallas straight from the college ranks is the most unusual of the group and the one most likely to change how a roster is built.
