Under the CBA approved in June 2025, each team now plays 84 games - 42 home, 42 away - with the two extra dates going to divisional opponents, so every division rival is seen four times. Preseason drops from six games to four. The season opens Tuesday, September 29, the earliest opening night the league has used, and ends Saturday, April 10, 2027.
Gavin McKenna, Whitehorse to the Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto took the Yukon-born forward first overall on June 26 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo and signed him to a three-year entry-level contract on July 3. He spent 2025-26 at Penn State after a WHL career with Medicine Hat that included a modern-record 40-game point streak and 129 points in 56 games. He could debut on opening night against Montreal.
Carolina raises a banner 20 years after the first one
The Hurricanes beat Vegas 4-2 in a Final played June 2-14, their second Cup and first since 2006. Captain Jordan Staal took the Conn Smythe. Rod Brind'Amour became the first person since Toe Blake in 1956 to win the Cup as both a player and a coach for the same franchise. Carolina raises the banner on opening night, September 29, against Florida.
Calgary says goodbye to the Saddledome
This is the Flames' final season at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Scotia Place, a $1.223 billion project with 18,400 hockey seats and 52 suites, is planned to open before the 2027-28 season, and will also house the WHL Hitmen and NLL Roughnecks. The Saddledome has been the Flames' home since 1983, which makes 2026-27 the last chance to see a game in it.
Brady Tkachuk is traded to Florida to play with his brother
Ottawa moved its captain to the Panthers on June 21 for the ninth and 25th picks in the 2026 draft, a conditional 2029 first and a 2027 second. Tkachuk had worn the C since November 2021 and left with 213 goals and 463 points in 572 games. He joins brother Matthew in Florida and makes his home debut on October 10 against Minnesota.
Five new head coaches, and Mike Babcock is back
Edmonton replaced Kris Knoblauch with Mike Babcock, the most polarising hire of the summer. Vancouver hired Manny Malhotra to replace Adam Foote, Toronto replaced Craig Berube with Jim Hiller, Los Angeles brought in Peter Laviolette for Hiller, and Vegas hired Ryan Craig after John Tortorella. Edmonton and Vancouver meet on opening night with both new coaches debuting.
Alex Ovechkin's 22nd and possibly final home opener
Washington hosts Pittsburgh on October 7 in what NHL.com describes as Ovechkin's 22nd and perhaps final home opener. There is no announced retirement, so treat it as a window rather than a certainty. The same weekend of hockey also carries Sidney Crosby's Penguins into a rematch of a 2026 playoff series against Philadelphia.
The Heritage Classic goes to Winnipeg on October 25
The Jets host Montreal outdoors at Princess Auto Stadium on October 25 in the Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic. It is the earliest of the three outdoor games on the calendar, and the only one in Canada. The Winter Classic follows on December 31 with Utah Mammoth against Colorado at Rice-Eccles Stadium, and the Stadium Series lands February 20 at AT and T Stadium.
A five-nation All-Star format at UBS Arena
All-Star Weekend runs February 5-6 on Long Island with a format nobody has used before: a five-team round-robin three-on-three tournament between Canada, Finland, Sweden, the USA and a World team. The skills competition on February 5 is restricted to players 25 and under. It is the first All-Star Game since 2024, the event having been displaced by international play.
Toronto rebuilds the front office as well as the bench
Along with hiring Jim Hiller as head coach, the Maple Leafs brought in John Chayka as general manager. Toronto also owns the first overall pick in Gavin McKenna. That is a new coach, a new GM and a franchise prospect landing in the same summer, which is a far more complete reset than the club has attempted in a decade.
A wave of general manager changes across the league
Joe Sakic returns to the GM chair in Colorado as Chris MacFarland departs for Nashville. Steve Yzerman is stepping down in Detroit. New Jersey replaced Tom Fitzgerald with Sunny Mehta, St. Louis handed the job to Alexander Steen after Doug Armstrong, and Vancouver promoted Ryan Johnson. Six front offices changed hands in one summer.
The emergency backup goalie rule finally gets tightened
Teams must now employ their own emergency backup goaltender rather than drawing on whoever the home club had available. The eligibility rules are strict: no professional hockey in the previous three seasons, never signed to a standard NHL contract, and no more than 80 professional games in a career. It closes the loophole that produced the sport's best accidental-hero stories.
Two Global Series trips: Helsinki in November, Dusseldorf in December
Carolina and Seattle play a two-game set in Helsinki on November 12 and 14. Ottawa and Chicago follow in Dusseldorf on December 18 and 20. The league has also scheduled nearly two dozen Monday afternoon North American games specifically timed for European primetime, which is a quieter but broader push than the four Global Series dates.
Matthew Schaefer opens his second season as the reigning Calder winner
The Islanders defenceman won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year and opens 2026-27 with New York. Second seasons are where defencemen who arrived early either consolidate or stall, and Schaefer will be doing it with 84 games instead of 82. He is one of the few young players on this list whose situation did not change over the summer.
