The Biggest NFL Storylines of the 2026 Season

Ranked by how much each one actually reshapes the season, not by how loud it was in July. Every trade, coaching hire, rule change and stadium note here was checked against NFL.com and league records on 2026-08-17, before a single regular-season snap. Written for someone deciding which Sunday windows are worth blocking off between September and January.

A Super Bowl LX rematch opens the season

Seattle opens as defending champion and immediately hosts the team it beat in Super Bowl LX. The Kickoff Game is Wednesday, September 9 at Lumen Field, 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC - a midweek slot rather than the traditional Thursday. New England arrives with A.J. Brown newly acquired from Philadelphia, so it is a rematch with a materially different Patriots offense.

Ten new head coaches - a record-tying carousel

Ten teams changed head coach this offseason, tying 1978, 1997, 2006 and 2022 for the most ever. Arizona (Mike LaFleur), Atlanta (Kevin Stefanski), Baltimore (Jesse Minter), Buffalo (Joe Brady), Cleveland (Todd Monken), Las Vegas (Klint Kubiak), Miami (Jeff Hafley), New York Giants (John Harbaugh), Pittsburgh (Mike McCarthy) and Tennessee (Robert Saleh) all start over.

John Harbaugh is fired in Baltimore and hired by the Giants

Baltimore moved on from John Harbaugh after the season and he landed in New York on a five-year deal, replacing Brian Daboll, who was fired mid-season. The Ravens promoted from the coordinator ranks, hiring former Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. Two franchises with very different problems are now betting on opposite ends of the experience curve.

Mike Tomlin resigns after 19 seasons; Mike McCarthy takes Pittsburgh

Tomlin announced his resignation on January 13, 2026 after 19 seasons in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers hired Mike McCarthy to replace him. Tomlin did not go to another sideline - on April 26 NBC Sports announced he would join the Football Night in America panel for the 2026 season. Pittsburgh also added receiver Michael Pittman from Indianapolis.

Myles Garrett is a Los Angeles Ram

Cleveland traded the two-time Defensive Player of the Year to Los Angeles on June 1 for edge rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second and a 2029 third. The Rams get a finished superstar on a defense that already rushes well; the Browns get a young edge on a rookie deal plus three picks. It is the clearest win-now versus reset trade of the offseason.

The quarterback carousel: five starters in new uniforms

Kirk Cousins was released by Atlanta and signed with the Raiders on a deal paying him $20 million in 2026. Kyler Murray went to Minnesota, Tua Tagovailoa to Atlanta, Geno Smith to the Jets and Malik Willis to Miami. Two of those are open competitions - Tagovailoa against Michael Penix Jr. in Atlanta, Murray against J.J. McCarthy in Minnesota - so Week 1 depth charts are not settled.

Fernando Mendoza goes No. 1 overall to the Raiders

Las Vegas took the Indiana quarterback first overall on April 23 at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy and a national championship at Indiana the previous season. The Raiders then signed Kirk Cousins, so the rookie is not being handed the job - the interesting question is how long the veteran holds it and what the first start looks like.

A.J. Brown lands in New England

The Patriots sent a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth to Philadelphia for the three-time All-Pro receiver on June 1, after months of rumours. New England reached Super Bowl LX and then spent real future capital on a finished No. 1 target rather than drafting one. The Eagles took the picks and moved on from a receiver they had paid at the top of the market.

Buffalo opens the new Highmark Stadium

The Bills leave the stadium they had occupied since 1973 and move into a new Highmark Stadium built on a reported $2.1 billion budget. Fixed seating is about 60,100, which makes it the smallest capacity in the NFL, and the club has already had to address sightline complaints case by case. The first game played there was a preseason win over Carolina.

Onside kicks are legal at any time now

Rule changes adopted March 31 let a team attempt an onside kick at any point in a game, not only when trailing in the fourth quarter. The touchback spot moves to the 20 when a penalty pushes the kickoff to the 50, and the receiving team now sets up with five players on the line instead of six. Replay was also expanded so officials can review flagrant acts with no flag thrown.

Nine international games, including firsts in Australia and France

The league plays nine regular-season games abroad. San Francisco and the Rams open the international slate at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Netflix in Week 1, the first regular-season game in Australia. Pittsburgh at New Orleans on October 25 is the first at the Stade de France in Paris. The rest: Rio on Sept. 27, three London dates in October, Madrid on Nov. 8, Munich on Nov. 15 and Mexico City on Nov. 22.

Cleveland resets: Stefanski out, Monken in, Garrett gone

The Browns fired Kevin Stefanski after six seasons, hired former Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, and traded Myles Garrett to the Rams. Stefanski was hired within the cycle by Atlanta, where he will not call plays. Cleveland now holds a 2027 first, a 2028 second and a 2029 third from the Garrett deal, plus edge rusher Jared Verse on a rookie contract.

Three stadium farewells and a name change

Tennessee plays its final season at the current Nissan Stadium before the new building opens in 2027. Jacksonville plays through an upper-deck renovation with EverBank Stadium capacity cut to roughly 43,500, and also hosts two of the London games. Houston is reverting NRG Stadium to its former name, Reliant Stadium. If you want a last visit to a building, this is the year.

The salary cap jumps another $22 million

The 2026 cap was set at $301.2 million per team, up about $22 million on the previous season and past $300 million for the first time. That is the mechanical reason the offseason looked the way it did - two blockbuster June trades, ten coaching changes and a wave of veteran free-agent contracts. Cap growth is the least visible storyline here and probably the most causal.
